Overview

The Dolpo Trek is a rugged and remote trekking route that offers unexplored terrain and stunning views of snow-capped mountains and small villages. The Upper Dolpo region is one of Nepal's least-visited trekking destinations, making it a hidden gem for adventurous travelers seeking new experiences.

Located in the far-western region of Nepal, the beautiful landscapes of western Nepal remain largely unexplored by many travelers. The alpine freshwater oligotrophic lake of Phoksundo and the Shey Phoksundo National Park are two of the major highlights of this trek, offering breathtaking natural beauty and a chance to witness Nepal's unique wildlife.

The trek starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, followed by a short but beautiful flight to Juphal, where the trek begins. From there, we make our way to Shey Phoksundo Lake, located at an impressive height of 3612 meters, before continuing on to trek through Shey Phoksundo National Park to reach Nangdala pass, where we can enjoy stunning views of Mount Kanjirowa. This isolated Himalayan sanctuary has inspired some of the world's most notable works of art, including Peter Matthiessen's best-selling book, Snow Leopard, and the Oscar-nominated movie, Caravan (also known as Himalaya).

The Dolpo circuit trek takes us through some of western Nepal's highest passes, including the Sela pass, where we can witness the incredible Mustang and the snow-capped mountains of Tibet. As we trek through rugged Himalayan terrain, we'll have the opportunity to visit beautiful settlements inhabited by the Tibetan people and explore the remote Shey Gompa monastery, which was established in the eleventh century and remains largely unchanged today. Finally, we'll climb the Jyanta pass via Tokyu village and enjoy a magnificent view of Mount Dhaulagiri.

As we make our way back to Juphal, we'll pass through some of the most beautiful villages in the region, including Dho Tarap, Ghyamgar, and Dunai. We'll fly back to Nepalgunj before returning to Kathmandu, having experienced one of the remotest and least-trekked trekking routes in Nepal.
