Overview

The Annapurna Circuit Trek with Thorong La Pass is one of Nepal’s most iconic and rewarding trekking adventures, offering an extraordinary journey through diverse landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the Himalayas. Encircling the majestic Annapurna Massif, this classic trek takes you through the heart of the Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal’s largest protected region, covering 7,629 square kilometers of pristine forests, alpine meadows, glacial valleys, high mountain deserts, and snow-capped peaks.

The adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Dharapani, where the trekking trail follows the beautiful Marsyangdi Valley through traditional villages inhabited by Gurung, Manangi, Thakali, and Tibetan-influenced communities. As the trail gradually ascends, trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking views of Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Gangapurna, Pisang Peak, Chulu Peaks, and the sacred Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain). Following the scenic upper route through Upper Pisang, Gyaru, and Ngawal, the trek reaches Manang, a picturesque Himalayan village and an important acclimatization stop before entering higher elevations.

Beyond Manang, the landscape transforms dramatically into a rugged alpine wilderness as the trail climbs toward Yak Kharka and Thorong Phedi. The ultimate challenge and highlight of the journey is crossing the legendary Thorong La Pass (5,416m), one of the highest trekking passes in the world. Standing atop the pass, surrounded by panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, is an unforgettable achievement and a defining moment of the trek.

After crossing the pass, the route descends into the arid, trans-Himalayan landscapes of Mustang, leading to the sacred pilgrimage site of Muktinath. The journey continues through the dramatic Kali Gandaki Valley, home to the world's deepest gorge between Annapurna I (8,091m) and Dhaulagiri (8,167m), before reaching Jomsom and concluding with a return to Pokhara.

Beyond its mountain scenery, the Annapurna Circuit offers a remarkable cultural experience. The region is home to diverse ethnic communities, including Gurung, Thakali, Magar, Bhotia, and Tibetan-influenced peoples, allowing trekkers to experience authentic Himalayan traditions, ancient monasteries, and warm local hospitality. The Annapurna Conservation Area is also renowned for its rich biodiversity, supporting hundreds of species of birds, mammals, and alpine flora, including rare wildlife such as the snow leopard, Himalayan musk deer, and Tibetan wolf.

Suitable for both experienced trekkers and fit first-time adventurers, the Annapurna Circuit Trek is considered moderately challenging due to its high altitude, long walking days, and the crossing of Thorong La Pass. With proper acclimatization and a well-paced itinerary, it remains one of the most achievable and rewarding high-altitude treks in Nepal. Combining dramatic landscapes, diverse cultures, and world-class mountain views, the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Thorong La Pass delivers an unforgettable Himalayan experience and remains one of the finest trekking adventures on earth.
