Mera Peak Climbing

Upon your arrival at the airport, be greeted by our representative waiting outside the terminal. They will escort you to the centrally located hotel in Kathmandu, and assist with the check-in process. After settling in, you can choose to relax at the hotel or visit our Trek Around Himalayas office to gather information about your trip. To cap off your first day, we will treat you to a warm welcome dinner.

The second day of the Mera Peak Climbing itinerary is a city tour of Kathmandu, which is the vintage capital of Nepal and holds many ancient arts, temples, and monuments. The city tour includes visiting 3 to 4 world heritage sites such as Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, Boudhanath Stupa, and Swyambhunath Stupa. After the city tour, there will be some last-minute shopping at the marketplace, Thamel, before returning to the hotel for the overnight stay.

Get ready to embark on the summit quest of Mera Peak. The journey starts with a breathtaking 45-minute flight to Lukla, which is the gateway to all of the Everest adventures. The flight will offer stunning views of the entire Himalayan range and lush green hills, making it one of the best experiences of your life. However, Lukla airport, known as one of the most dangerous airports in the world, may get your heart racing during landing. Once you arrive at Lukla, you will need to obtain a Local Area Permit from the local authorities to continue your journey. There are several restricted villages along the way that require a permit for entry. Your next destination is Chhuthang, located to the east of Lukla. On the way, you will pass by small Sherpa settlements and Buddhist Mani walls, and Prayer wheels.

The journey towards the Mera Peak summit begins with a trek from Chhuthang to Tuli Kharkha. The trek involves a strenuous climb to the Zatrawala Pass, offering panoramic views of nearby peaks. The trail then descends to Thuli Kharkha, passing through Yak pasture lands. The scenic trek ends with an overnight stay at a lodge in Thuli Kharkha.

Today's trek will lead you from Thuli Kharka Kothe to the Hinku valley in the Khumbu region. The trail begins with a gentle descent with mountain views but includes some ups and downs through the lush forest of Rhododendrons, Pines, and Oaks. The first sight of the ultimate destination, Mera Peak, will be seen upon entering the Hinku valley, along with other snow-dotted peaks. The trek requires a descent through a steep hill and a final uphill climb to reach Kothe on the west side of the Hinku valley, which is home to a serene wilderness and tea houses.

After a night at Kothe, the next destination on the Mera Peak Climbing journey is Thangnak. The trail follows the riverbed of the Hinku River and leads to Gondishung, where you can see the two-century-old Buddhist Gompa, Lungsumgba Gompa, and rock art depicting Mera Peak. The trek to Thangnak is easy and offers beautiful views. Thangnak is a pasture land that only sees locals during summer for yak grazing but has basic tea houses for food and overnight stays for Mera Peak climbers.

The Mera Peak climbing trail moves to Khare from Thangnak. This is a difficult day on the trail as it involves a steep moraine trail, a difficult part being the way near the nose of Hinku Nap and Shar glaciers. Climbers need to be careful while navigating this section. After that, there is a steep hill climb to reach Khare, which takes 3 to 4 hours and requires saving energy. Khare is the acclimatization point and climbers will spend another day here to acclimate.

Acclimatization day is crucial in high-altitude adventures and is necessary before attempting a peak expedition like Mera Peak climbing. Altitude sickness can occur above 5000 meters, and Mera Peak's summit is at 6,476m. Acclimatization helps the body adapt to higher altitudes, reducing the risk of altitude sickness. An acclimatization day is included in the Mera Peak climbing itinerary, where you spend the day at Khare, which is the gateway to the Mera Base Camp.

The journey towards Mera Peak continues as the trekker leaves Khare for the Mera Base Camp (5300m). The trail to the base camp is technically demanding, as it involves navigating through a steep glacier trail, which is known to be more difficult to walk than regular trails. Once the trekker arrives at the base camp, their Sherpa team will set up camp and unpack equipment. The trekker will spend the night at the campsite, enjoying a night under the open sky and stars. Tomorrow is another important day of the expedition.

The next step in the Mera Peak climbing journey is to ascend to Mera High Camp. The trail from base camp leads to Mera La Pass, which is a steep climb through a rocky and snowy track. After several hours of steep climbing, you will reach the Mera High Camp where you can enjoy the view of peaks such as Everest, Nuptse, and others. Your crew will set up the campsite for you to rest, eat, and observe the starry night.

The final and most important day of the Mera Peak climbing is the summit day, where climbers aim to reach the summit before noon to avoid strong winds. The climb is guided by experienced guides and is not technically challenging. The views from the summit are breathtaking, with several eight-thousanders visible. Climbers will feel a great sense of accomplishment and celebrate the success before descending back to Khare for the night stay.

The weather in high-altitude regions, including Mera Peak, can be unpredictable. A reserve day is included in the itinerary in case of bad weather during the scheduled summit day, but if everything goes according to plan, the trek will continue as planned.

The next step after reaching the summit of Mera Peak is the return journey to Kothe.

The trek from Khare to Kothe is a downhill route and takes 3 to 4 hours to complete. The trail passes through Thangnak before reaching Kothe. The route is easier to walk on as it is mostly downhill and surrounded by dense forests of Oak, Pine, and Rhododendron trees.

You will leave Kothe after breakfast and trek to Thuli Kharka, which takes 5 to 6 hours. The route is uphill and goes through forested trails on the western side of the Hinku Valley. Thuli Kharka offers a great view of Mera Peak and its other faces, so take advantage of the opportunity if you missed it the first time.

On the last day of the Mera Peak Climbing journey, trek from Thuli Kharka to Lukla in one day. Pass via Zatrawala Pass, which provides views of most of the Everest peaks, before starting the downhill trek. After 6 hours of retracing the trek, reach Lukla. Spend the last night at Lukla before flying back to Kathmandu the next day.

The end of your stay in Lukla will come when you take an early flight to Kathmandu. After a 45-minute flight, you will arrive at the airport in Kathmandu and be dropped off at your hotel by our team. Since you will arrive in Kathmandu before noon, you still have time for a city tour if you missed any sights during your journey. Alternatively, you can simply rest and relax in your hotel room after the long journey.

Start your day with a filling breakfast, then board an early morning flight from Lukla to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, you will be taken to the hotel. Take some time to rest, or explore the bustling streets of Thamel. Walking around Thamel is a great way to experience the sights and sounds of Kathmandu. To celebrate the successful completion of the trek, Trek Around Himalayas will host a farewell dinner in the evening where you can sit and reflect on your journey.

Your journey home begins today. Our representatives from Trek Around Himalayas will escort you to the International Airport in accordance with your flight schedule. It's recommended to arrive at the airport three hours before your flight. Trek Around Himalayas will provide a fond farewell, ensuring that your experience with us is remembered forever.
