Overview

The Makalu base camp trek will lead you through the Makalu Barun National Park 1,500 km2 and buffer zone 830 km2 which treasures some of the last remaining pristine forests and alpine meadows. From tropical forests along the Arun River to icy mountain summits, Nepal’s Makalu Barun National Park and buffer zone is the only protected area on earth with an elevation gain of 8000m. You will trek along the 46 km-long Barun valley enjoying the stunning views of mountain peaks, glaciers, high-altitude lakes, pastures, forests, and rivers. The trek offers magnificent views of the skyline of a panorama of rugged Himalayan peaks including mount Makalu at 8463m, Chamlang at 7319m, Baruntse at 7129m, and Mera Peak at 6654m. This trek is a must-do trek for those who want to see the purest state of nature available on the earth.

Trip Preparation

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu (1,350m/4,428ft)

Our representative will pick you up at the international airport and drive you to the hotel. After then you will take a meandering evening walk with your guide through Kathmandu’s heritage sites, and get acquainted with one another over dinner together.

Day 2 : Sightseeing in Kathmandu

Today you will spend the day discovering medieval Kathmandu. Venture into Pashupatinath and visit Nepal’s largest Buddhist stupa, the Boudhanath Stupa. Later afternoon you will visit the monkey temple and then stroll around the durbar squares in the evening. Overnight stay at a hotel near Thamel.

Day 3 : Kathmandu - Chichila Bazar (1,980m/6,497ft)

You will take a scenic 45 min flight to Tumlingtar enjoying the Himalayas in the North. From Tumlingtar you will take a 4 hours drive to Chichila Bazar and stay overnight in a tea house.

Day 4 : Chichila Bazar - Num (1,560m/5,119ft) : 6-7 hours

Early morning you will start descending a trek through the lush green forests and villages. The trail passes along the ridge offering sideway views and ends in village Num. You will stay overnight in Num.

Day 5 : Num - Seduwa (1,500m/4,922ft) : 6-7 hours

Today you will descend down to the Barun river through thick forests and cultivated lands. After crossing the river starts Makalu Barun conservation area, you will trek up to the village Seduwa. Your guide will set up camp in Seduwa for staying overnight.

Day 6 : Seduwa - Tashigaon (2,100m/6,890ft) : 4-5 hours

You will trek along the ridge with Ipsuwa and Kasuwa rivers sideways. Your guide will tell you interesting facts about the area. Through the scattered settlement and cultivated lands, you will get to Tashi Gaon. From here you can get awe-inspiring mountain views.

Day 7 : Tashigaon - Khongma Danda (3,500m/11,483ft) : 6-7 hours

Today you will trek steeply up through forests and Kharka along the ridge. At the top you can see two beautiful lakes, further trekking you will get to Khongma Danda. This is the last village before entering Barun valley. You will stay overnight in a camp.

Day 8 : Rest Day

Today you will acclimatize at Khongma Danda gazing at the beautiful mountains. You can explore the surrounding area and prepare for cross Shipton La. You will stay overnight in a camp

Day 9 : Khongma Danda - Dobate (3,930m/12,893ft) : 6-7 hours

Today you will cross the Shipton La 4216m and descend down via Kalo Pokhari (3930m) and cross Keke La at 4,170m. From here you can get stunning views of mount Chamlang (7321m), Peak 6 (6,524m), and Peak 7 (6,758m). You will slowly descend down to the beautiful Barun valley and stay overnight in Dobate.

Day 10 : Dobate - Yangle Kharka (3,557m/11,670ft) : 6-7 hours

Today you will trek moderately up through the beautiful rhododendron forest and get to Yangle Kharka. You can observe very rare species of vegetation in Barun valley. Your guide will set up camp at Yangle Kharka for staying overnight.

Day 11 : Yangle Kharka - Langmale Kharka (4,410m/14,468ft) : 5-6 hours

Today you will trek along the Barun valley enjoying dramatic views of the park. You will pass through Merek and get to Langmale Kharka for overnight camping.

Day 12 : Langmale Kharka - Makalu Base Camp (4,870m/15,978ft) : 6-7 hours

Early morning you will start a slightly ascending trek to Shersong, from there you can get a beautiful view of mount Makalu. Continuing further you will get to Makalu base camp surrounded by magnificent mountains. Overnight camping at Makalu base camp.

Day 13 : Explore Makalu Base Camp

Today is the most rewarding day of the trek at Makalu base camp. You will hike to the surrounding area to discover interesting rocks, glaciers, mountains, and peaks. Camping overnight at Makalu base camp.

Day 14 : Makalu Base Camp - Yangle Kharka : 6-7 hours

Today you will trek back to Yangle Kharka through a relatively easy descending trail. You will get to Yangle Kharka for staying overnight. Along the trek, your guide will tell you interesting stories about the region.

Day 15 : Yangle Kharka - Dobate : 6-7 hours

You will continue the slightly descending trek through the alpine meadow of Yangle Kharka. Along the way, you can see beautiful waterfalls, forests,s, and numerous ice-capped peaks. You will trek along the Barun river until you reach Dobate. You will stay overnight in Dobate.

Day 16 : Dobate - Khongma Danda : 5-6 hours

Today you will trek up to Shipton La through a dense forest of rhododendron and firs. After then you will descend to Khongma Danda for staying overnight.

Day 17 : Khongma Danda - Tashi Gaon : 4-5 hours

You will continue descending trek through the barren hills and then the thick rhododendron forest and get to Tashi Gaon. Your guide will take you around to explore the authentic Sherpa culture in the evening. You will stay overnight in Tashi Gaon.

Day 18 : Tashigaon - Seduwa : 4-5 hours

Today you descend down to the Barun river where you will exit the Makalu Barun Conservation Area, cross the river, and ascend up to Seduwa village. You will stay overnight in Seduwa village.

Day 19 : Seduwa - Num : 5-6 hours

You will continue ascending the trek through beautiful forests, farm fields, and Sherpa villages. On the way, your guide will tell you interesting stories about the village. Finally, you will get to Num village which remarks the end of walking. You will stay overnight in Num.

Day 20 : Num - Tumlingtar : 6-7 hours

Today you will take 7 hour's jeep drive to Tumlingtar. On the way, you can see scattered settlements on the slopes of giant green hills. You will find the jeep ride through the winding dirt road of eastern Nepal a thrilling adventure. You will stay overnight in a hotel in Tumlingtar.

Day 21 : Tumlingtar - Kathmandu

Early morning you will take a flight to Kathmandu on a twin otter plane. During your flight, you can again get great views of the Himalayas including Makalu, Everest, Gaurishankar, and Langtang in the north. After a scenic 45 minutes flight you will get to Kathmandu. Your guide will drive you to your hotel. Rest of the day you will spend in leisure. In the evening your guide will escort you to the farewell dinner.

Day 22 : Departure

Make the most of your last minutes in Kathmandu with breakfast in a bistro, a city walk, and additional trinket shopping. Your guide will meet you at your inn and drive you to the airport two hours before the scheduled flight.
